Paai

 Certaines femmes sont si inspirantes. Paai est une de celles-là. A 35 ans, elle a déjà eu 5 enfants et son aînée est maman à son tour, ce qui fait d'elle une jeune grand-mère. Son courage, sa force de travail, sa générosité, sa sensibilité font d'elle une amie précieuse. Je l'ai rencontrée lorsque j'étais enceinte, elle a été ma professeure de Hmong, mon amie, la personne que je visitais tous les jours, ma professeure de broderie, ma bouée de sauvetage alors que j'étais seule et enceinte au bout du monde. Nous avons vécu de dures épreuves ensemble qui ont soudé notre amitié ! Paai est dans mon coeur pour toute la joie qu'elle distribue autour d'elle.

Some women are so inspiring. Paai is one of them. At 35, she has already had 5 children, and her eldest is a mother herself, making her a young grandmother. Her courage, work ethic, generosity, and sensitivity make her a precious friend. I met her when I was pregnant; she was my Hmong teacher, my friend, the person I visited every day, my embroidery teacher, my lifeline when I was alone and pregnant at the other end of the world. We went through tough times together that strengthened our friendship! Paai is in my heart for all the joy she spreads around her.

De gauche à droite, nous avons Thu , Rine et Shein, trois petite fille hmong qui seront actrices de la transformation de la culture hmong. Leurs mères commencent déjà à s'émanciper de la domination masculine et des traditions lourdes pour elles. Je ne sais pas si moi, femme occidentale, je correspond à leur modèle mais ce que j'ai constaté, c'est que beaucoup aimeraient être célibataires comme moi. Souvent battues, elles ne représentent pas grand-chose dans la hiérarchie familiale, n'apportant également aucune terre, ni bien. Voilà pourquoi il est impossible pour elles de divorcer. Ces trois petites vont contribuer à un monde plus juste.

From left to right, we have Thu, Rine, and Shein, three little Hmong girls who will be instrumental in the transformation of Hmong culture. Their mothers are already beginning to free themselves from male domination and traditions that are burdensome for them. I don't know if I, a Western woman, fit their model, but what I've noticed is that many would like to be single like me. Often beaten, they don't represent much in the family hierarchy, and also contribute no land or assets. This is why it's impossible for them to divorce. These three little girls will contribute to a more just world.
